Visible Mending: Introduction to Darning (Beginner-Friendly!)
In this single-session class, we will learn the basics of visible mending through darning. Bring a clothing item that needs repair, or one that’s ready for a pop of color and creativity. Together, we’ll learn how to set up an embroidery hoop, work with embroidery floss, stitch using a template, and weave threads into a one-of-a-kind patch, playing with color and texture along the way.
During the workshop, you’ll create one patch, and you’ll get to keep the materials so you can continue mending and experimenting at home. This is an introductory-level class, but participants should have a basic understanding of threading a needle and tying knots to ensure the class runs smoothly.
Darning is a form of stitched weaving that creates a sturdy, embroidered patch directly on the fabric. Whether you’re repairing a favorite garment or adding new life to an old one, this class will guide you step-by-step through the process. You’ll be encouraged to experiment with bold or subtle color combinations, letting your repair become a design feature rather than something to hide. No two mendings are alike, and imperfections are part of the beauty, progress over perfection is encouraged.
This class is perfect for anyone interested in sustainable fashion, slow stitching, or adding a personal, colorful touch to their wardrobe. You’ll leave with practical skills, inspiration, and the confidence to continue mending.
Age Requirement: Adults (18+)
Materials Fee: The kit for the class costs $15 and includes an embroidery hoop, needles, embroidery floss, template, and interfacing. Please bring $15 cash or check with you to class to pay for your kit.
