Tapestry Weaving Based on a Drawing (Beginner-Friendly!)
Learn the art of tapestry weaving in this beginner-friendly, single-session workshop! Using upcycled t-shirt scraps, you’ll create a one-of-a-kind woven tapestry inspired by a drawing. This technique is rooted in one of the most ancient forms of weaving, with examples dating back to Ancient Egypt. Come discover how this cherished tradition has been passed down through generations and is still practiced today.
In class, we will create a simple drawing, called a cartoon in weaving, and learn how to translate it into a woven design (templates will be provided for those who prefer not to draw). You’ll gain a foundational understanding of tapestry weaving, including the tools used, the difference between warp and weft, and basic weaving structures to get you started. Feel free to bring your own t-shirts to upcycle, or use the materials provided.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with your own completed tapestry, along with a cardboard frame loom, yarns, a needle, and a ruler: everything you need to continue weaving at home.
Age Requirement: Adults (18+) or Teens (13+) with a Parent
Materials Fee: The class kit is $10 which includes a cardboard frame loom, yarns, needle, ruler, t-shirt scraps Please bring $10 cash or check with you to class to pay for your kit.
Materials to bring: Feel free to bring your own t-shirt that you would like to upcycle as well.
