“I really enjoy the process of slow stitching and love peoples' reactions to it.  As a result of that, I love to show people how to recycle items to create their own works of art. My students always walk away knowing they are truly creative artists.” - your instructor for this Skill Share, Kitty Savel

Join us in the Studio for a phenomenal workshop with local artist Kitty Savel, and create your very own slow stitched fabric collage! We are thrilled with this opportunity to learn from Kitty, an award-winning collage, textile, and multimedia artist who has exhibited her work throughout Pittsburgh and in online exhibitions. Slow stitching is the process of adding decoration to fabric through the use of embellishments and simple hand stitches. It is one of the most approachable, playful, low-pressure forms of textile art – the process is relaxing and the result is unique and beautiful! Come to this workshop if you’d like to play and experiment with fabric collage in a welcoming, low-pressure, supportive environment. Kitty will teach several basic stitches and embellishment techniques, and you will leave with your own piece of art! This class incorporates the use of recycled fabrics, buttons, lace and other embellishments. Different shapes will be provided for students to choose from. All supplies will be provided - just bring yourself and your creativity! Whether you’d like to pick slow stitching up as a hobby, or you’d just like to try it out, this is the perfect introduction to the craft.

No previous experience is required.

Ages 12+ welcome, with an adult.

We will have a photographer present to take photos of the event for our marketing - please fill out the photo release for every person who will attend (the form will come up when you check out). Thank you!

Kitty Savel is a Fiber Artist who lives and practices her art in Dallastown, Pennsylvania.  Her Fiber Art includes paper and fabric collage, wood and found materials assemblage, knit and crochet, screen and block printing on paper and fabric.

Kitty is self-taught with help and input from other Fiber Artists.  She has taught fiber art at several venues in the Pittsburgh area including The Society for Contemporary Craft, North Hills Arts Center, Full Pint Wild Side Pub and Whitehall and Butler libraries.

Kitty is very sensitive to the inspirations around her in her everyday life.  She incorporates recycled materials in her collage work.  Color plays a huge role in how Kitty approaches her work.  She will take a tree, for instance, and depict it in fabric and paper in colors other than traditional green and brown.

Kitty has exhibited in galleries and museums in Pennsylvania.  Her piece entitled "Color Lattice on Black" was a finalist in the Fusion Art's 3rd Annual Colors International Online Juried Art Exhibition for the month of February 2019. https://fusionartps.com/3rd-colors-art-exhibition-febuary-…/ She has won Honorable Mention for her sweater designs at North Hills Arts Center and her work was featured in the 2020 Achieving Women of Centre County held at the Bellefonte Art Museum.

In 2024 Kitty collaborated with 10 other knit designers and Vogue Designer Deborah Newton on a book of hat designs entitled The Year of Hats.  This book is available on Amazon and Ravelry.
