Educational Standards + Policies
FOSY Educational and Class Standards
Classes must be project-based, with practical application of the skills learned in the class.
Classes must be tailored to a specific experience level and age range.
Classes must have a handout or booklet with information about what the students have learned in the class.
The content of the handout is up to you as every skill/class will be different, but here are some suggestions:
It is often helpful for the learners if this document reminds them how to complete the steps of the skills learned in class, either in written or illustrated form.
Since many of us have been using these skills for years before we started to teach them, it can be easy for us to forget how difficult they can be to learn. There is nothing more frustrating than taking a two-hour class and then going home and realizing that you forgot how to do what you are supposed to be practicing.
Offering additional resources like YouTube videos or websites is often appreciated for the same reason as above.
Giving some of the history of the craft can be an interesting and fun addition for “Taster” classes (for more information on “Taster” classes, see the “Class Design Tips” blog post.
Ensure you are not infringing on copyright if you reproduce information or illustrations from the internet in your handout.
Classes must be able to be completed within the given time-frame (i.e. a 2-hour class needs to be completed within 2-hours.)
Class Scheduling, Procedures and Policies
Class Scheduling:
All class listings, in the correct format, are due the day after the Instructor Calendar closes. Any sample photos are due at the time the listings are submitted. To review the correct format, go to the “Listings Format” blog post.
Registration for classes must close at least 3 days prior to the class date.
Classes that are multi-session need to be completed within a time-frame that is reasonable for both the learners and the Studio.
Instructor Arrival and Learner Check-in:
Instructor must arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled class time.
If the main building doors are closed, follow these instructions to enter the building: ACCESSING THE WIRE WORKS
An FOSY representative may or may not be there for the Instructor’s class. If no one is at the Studio when the Instructor arrives, the Instructor can use their unique code (this can be found in your welcome packet) to access the lockbox to the left of the Studio door. Please put the key back after unlocking the door.
An excel file with participant names will be emailed to the instructor the day after class registration closes. Instructors can use this list to check students in.
Learning Environment:
Classes must maintain a pleasant learning environment for all learners. Instructors must refrain from making political or divisive comments, or wearing anything with divisive messages.
Instructors may only photograph the learner’s project or work with the learner’s permission. No photos may be taken of the learners themselves without a signed waiver (please contact Rachel if you would like waivers provided for your class). All minors must have a waiver signed by their parents.
End of Class:
Instructors must ensure all learners have departed within 15 minutes of the scheduled end time.
Instructors must return the Studio to the state it was prior to the class within 30 minutes of the scheduled end time.
Instructors are responsible for locking the Studio door upon leaving.
Payout:
Fabric of Society York, LLC shall pay Independent Contractor via Melio or like platform on the first (1st) and third (3rd) Friday of each month for all work performed in the previous period, at the agreed upon rate
